How Do You Install Backer Board In A Shower?
A shower enclosure is a high-moisture environment, and you can ensure a secure water-tight substructure for the ceramic tile by installing a cementitious-type backer board. Ceramic tile backer board is available in several thicknesses, but ½ inch is recommended as the minimum thickness for all shower wall applications. Cover the wall studs of the shower alcove with 15-lb. roofing paper installed in horizontal continuous pieces. Begin the installation at the lowest level, with the lower edge of the roofing paper touching the tub rim or shower floor surface. Overlap each horizontal strip a minimum of 3 inches over the piece below it. Attach the roofing paper to the wall studs with a staple gun. Make certain to fit the roofing paper tightly into the corners. Install the paper to 3 to 4 inches above the planned height to be tiled to allow the sheetrock above to lap the roofing paper when installed. Measure the horizontal dimension across the back wall of the shower alcove. The backer board
