How Do You Install An Inline Fuel Pump?
When preparing to install an inline fuel pump, there are many considerations for proper application and fuel delivery. There are two distinct categories of fuel pumps–carbureted and fuel-injected. A fuel pump designed for carbureted vehicles varies widely in the volume of fuel it will pump. Fuel injectors require high pressure–constant 40 to 60 pounds–as well as volume. This pressure would flood a carbureted engine because the needle and seat in a carburetor will take only up to 8 pounds. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on jack stands. Locate a position for the fuel pump close to the fuel tank, free of the heat from the exhaust and clear of the axle’s movement. The best location is generally on the inside of the frame rail just forward of the tank or on the body section forward of the axle and what would be the backside of the rear seat upright. The pump must be protected from road damage, heat and moving parts. The fuel line should not pass over the exhaust. Mark and d
