Most electric baseboard thermostats are of the line voltage type. A line voltage thermostat is capable of controlling voltages that range from 120VAC up to 240VAC. The internal switching mechanism is made to withstand this type of electrical current. There are two basic types of line voltage thermostats, a single pole and a double pole. If the baseboard heater is powered by 120VAC then a single pole thermostat is utilized. A 240VAC heater will then use a double pole line voltage thermostat. All electric baseboard thermostats are mounted on the heater unit itself. Remove all electrical power from the baseboard heater circuit. Shut off the circuit breaker or pull the fuses that are located inside the main electrical panel that feed power to the heater. Use the screwdriver and remove the single screw that holds the cover plate in place at either end of the heater unit.
