Proper attic ventilation will protect your home from moisture that could potentially damage the house. Damage happens because unfinished areas of your home, like the attic, cannot handle moisture. As moisture works its way into an attic that does not have a proper vent installed, it can sit for long periods of time and cause dangerous mold and mildew. The moisture can even begin to rot your home’s structure. Remove the shingles along the area of the roof ridge where you are going to install your attic vent. This should be the majority of your roof’s ridge. Follow the vent instructions to determine how big of an area of shingles to remove. Finish pulling out all of the roofing nails and shingles. Create a chalk line along either side of the roof’s ridge. Set your circular saw blade to the appropriate depth. Typically, this is just a bit deeper than the sheathing. Cut along your chalk line.
