You’d like to install a fence on your concrete deck, but you’re not quite sure how to place your posts. There are two basic options: You can install them on top; this allows you to do all of the work yourself and is less expensive. Or you can cut through the deck and place your posts in the ground; this will require the services of a concrete cutting company. It is more expensive and can present problems with cracking concrete and moisture, but it provides additional strength. Lay out your fence post positions and mark them in chalk. You can purchase builders chalk in stick form at your local home center. Make sure you make your corners square. Measure 3 feet along one angle from your corner and mark the spot. Measure 4 feet along the opposing angle from your corner and mark the spot. The measurement from the 3 foot mark diagonally to the 4 foot mark should be 5 feet.
