Furnace and AC thermostats control the temperature settings in your home. When they malfunction they need to be replaced. There are many types of thermostats available at your local hardware store. Many people are now opting for programmable thermostats to save on energy costs. Once you learn how to install a thermostat for a furnace, you can have the old one replaced in just a few hours. Before attempting any work, shut the power off to the furnace at the circuit breaker box in the home. Remove the cover plate to the existing thermostat. Insert a flathead screwdriver between the cover plate and the mounting plate and pop off the cover. Unscrew the mounting plate from the wall using a screwdriver. Label the wires that connect the thermostat to the furnace unit. Tape each wire with masking tape and write on the tape where each wire goes. This step will help with the installation process.
