How Do You Install A Sprinkler System (Part 6)?

In this part 6 of how to install a sprinkler system we will wire up the solenoid valves to the sprinkler controller, leak check, blow out the sprinkler lines, and install the sprinkler heads. [If you are looking for the beginning of this 7 part installation guide a link has been provided for Part 1 at the bottom of this article.] Wiring up the solenoid valves is a relatively simple job requiring only a multi-conductor cable, some electrical tape and twist on wire nuts. Just make sure that the multi-conductor cable has at least ‘n+1’ conductors in it (where ‘n’ is the number of sprinkler circuits you are using). The extra wire is the common return wire for all the solenoid valves. First, make sure you have the correct conductor gauge for the distance you are planning to run your cable. If your cable is 100 feet long (from the sprinkler controller to the solenoid valves) try to make sure the conductors are at least 18AWG. Fifty feet or less you may be able to get away with 20AWG wire. Fo
