When you installed a new vanity in a bathroom there is a possibility that the existing drain won’t line up the same as the old drain did. If the new vanity is a different size than the original or positioned a bit differently on the wall, as in this case the P trap may not line up with the tail piece hanging down from the sink. Here’s one way to attack this problem. In this situation the drain pipe is in the wall yours may come up through the floor but the procedure is the same. Attach the P trap to the fitting in the wall using the plastic washer and plastic nut that comes with the P trap. Also assemble the trap itself. The trap is designed to hold water in it to prevent sewer gas from coming into your house. Once the P trap is installed in the wall you can determine if the trap lines up with the tail piece.
