Want to install a water supply line shutoff valve? Shutoff valves can save you in emergency situations and make repairs easier. Here is a step by step guide on how to install shut off valves. Shut off the water main supply. Your water main is normally located in the garage or outside your house. Disconnect the faucet supply lines. This would be a good time to replace any old or worn out faucet lines. Cut the copper pipe with a pipe cutter. Turn the cutter as you tighten it in increments to prevent denting the pipe. Clean the edges of the copper pipe with a piece of emery cloth. This will remove any burs and imperfections for a tighter fit. Slip the compression nut over the pipe followed by the ferrule. Attach the shut off value to the pipe. Coat the threads with pipe compound. Now tighten the fitting using two crescent wrenches.
