A shower pan is placed at the base of a shower to catch the water from the shower head and prevent damage to the floor and surrounding walls. Over time, a shower pan can become worn and may leak. When this happens, it is essential to install a new pan. Although professionals can be hired to do the task, installing your own shower pan can be done in an afternoon, in a few simple steps. Lay the corner pan on the shower’s base to be sure it will fit properly into the desired space. Remove and set aside. Mix mortar according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Layer a quarter-inch layer on the floor of the shower where the pan will be placed. Smooth with a trowel. Make a slight slope in the mortar in the direction of the drain, if the preformed pan does not have a slope. (Most come with a slope built in.) Allow the mortar to dry.
