A porcelain sink on a tiled countertop lends a great vintage look to a kitchen, and it’s easier to do than you might think. Most sink units today are designed to be “self-rimming,” meaning the outer rim at the top of the sink sits slightly over the edge of the countertop surface around it, creating its own border. This means you don’t have to get your tiles cut exactly to the edge of the sink, but rather just far enough so that the sink can sit over them. Install the tile over the whole countertop, except around the hole for the sink. Lay full tiles as close to the hole as they will fit, leaving an untiled perimeter around the edge that’s less than the width of a tile. When laying out your countertop tile, take the sink hole into account to make sure you don’t have any partial tiles around the edge that are less than 2 inches wide.
