Many pickup choices are available for amplifying acoustic guitarists, but the most popular for self-installation is the magnetic sound-hole pickup. Unlike internally installed piezo pickups that must be installed by a professional repair person, most sound-hole pickups do not require modification to the guitar. Magnetic sound-hole pickups work in the same manner as electric guitar pickups–reproducing sound by detecting string vibrations with an electromagnet, and sending the signal to the amplifier via guitar cable. Some models have a built-in cable which allows direct connection to the amplifier, while other models feature an input jack suspended from the guitar’s strap button for connection to an external guitar cable.
