The hardware of a computer can only function if there is software that connects it all together. This software is known as an operating system. It is the system that allows for applications to be run and to ensure that all the components–motherboard, hard drive, RAM and CD drive, for example–are able to function together. While most computers come with an operating system already installed, if it doesn’t, the process of installing one is not difficult. However, it can take a considerable amount of time. Ensure that all of the files on the computer have been backed up. If you are installing a new operating system on an old computer that has been in use for a while, you don’t want to lose your files. However, if you have never used the computer before, you will have no files on the computer. Reboot your computer, and when the screen flashes, whether it is with a logo of the company or it says BIOS, click your computer’s BIOS button. For some computers, the correct key is F2. For others
