All kitchen drains in the United States are required to be equipped with a sink trap. Sink traps are required as a matter of safety, as they prevent toxic and flammable gases from entering the living quarters should a sewer pipe become backed up. The trap operates to prevent gases from entering the home by keeping a barrier of water between the drain and the kitchen sink drain every time water runs through the pipe. Follow the instructions below to install a kitchen sink trap. Connect the tail piece to the bottom of the sink’s drain underneath the sink. The tail piece is the straight piece of pipe with two slip nuts located at each end. Press one end of the tail piece against the sink’s drain, then slide the slip nut over the threads of the drain and hand tighten the slip nut by turning the nut in a clockwise direction.
