Home water filter systems are fairly easy to install and maintain, giving you the ability to control the quality of the water you drink. You can install a home water filter yourself in two hours or less. Locate the main water supply valve to your home and shut it off using a pipe wrench. The shut-off valve is normally located on the basement wall nearest the street. Turn on the cold water valve on your kitchen sink and allow the water to run dry. Find an area along the cold water line between the main shut-off valve and the water heater where you want to place your water filter. Place a bucket under the water pipe where you will be installing your water filter. Measure the width of the water filter to determine how much of the water pipe you need to remove. Use a tape measure and black marker to mark where you need to cut the pipe. Cut the water pipe using a hacksaw. Remove the section of pipe.
