Placing the freestanding fireplace against an outside facing wall is typical for venting purposes. Construct a non-combustible for the fireplace to stand upon. Brick, stone and heat resistant tile are common products for the hearth. The hearth must extend at least 16 inches in front of the freestanding fireplace and 10 inches around the remainder of the unit. Place the freestanding fireplace at least 36 inches from any wall.
