Digital thermostats can get pretty elaborate. They can control multiple heat, cool and heat pumps at the same time. They can include wireless outdoor sensors and wireless remote controls. Problems arise linking accessories to the thermostat, particularly if you have more than one thermostat, because each accessory needs to be linked to each thermostat separately. Also, mounting the outdoor sensor can get a bit problematic because it needs to be at least 6 inches below any overhang, but protected from direct sunlight. Mount and wire the thermostat. Pull the wiring through the back of the wall plate and install the wires following the wiring guide in the manual. There will be detailed wiring guides for specific system types. Customize the thermostat setup. Enter the “Installer Options” or similar menu on the thermostat and punch in the security code. It’s often printed on the back.
