Every home owner will face the prospect of replacing the sidewalk. Check building codes with your local city hall to insure you are meeting all safety standards and requirements by installing a cobblestone sidewalk. Remove and dispose of the existing sidewalk. Dig down approximately 3 or 4 inches for light foot traffic. Make sure your final bed is level. Lay down a bed of sand. The sand should be deep enough that when you set a cobblestone on top of it, the cobblestone is slightly higher than you want the final sidewalk to be. Lightly water the sand when it is leveled and at the proper depth. Rent a compactor and compact the sand tightly. This gives you the proper foundation for your cobblestones.
