A ceramic tile baseboard is created by purchasing and installing what tile manufacturers call base tile. They run along the bottom of the wall and have one edge that flares out. The flared edge of the base tile is always the bottom edge when the tile is set. Its purpose is to give the visual effect that the base tile is blending with the floor. Base tiles are as easy to set as regular field or floor tile. Lay out the tiles first and make any necessary cuts. Leave a 1/8-inch gap at the inside corners. This allows for the contraction and expansion of the building as the seasons change. Butter the back of each base tile with mortar, using a trowel. Use the saw-toothed edge of the trowel to rake grooves through the mortar. Press the tile against the wall. Place two 1/8-inch tile spacers underneath the base tile. Repeat.
