The purpose of a muffler is to reduce toxic emissions and noise. The parts of a muffler are the backbox and the tailpipes. The noise of a car muffled by a muffler comes from pressure waves from the opening and closing of the engine’s valves. If the pressure inside the muffler is not of equal proportion to that of the waves coming in, the performance of the car is impacted. Get the car up on a hydraulic lift. You can prop the car up on jacks or ramps but for convenience, a lift is better. Assess the shape of the tailpipe and the muffler. You will also want to look at the catalytic converter also. Rust comes from moisture inside and outside. Any part rusted through or close to it needs to be replaced. Find the stock exhaust system and unbolt it from the back of the car. It is important you work your way forward instead of backwards. Some parts may be reusable-you don’t want to ruin these parts. Take the exhaust system apart and remove the hangers if they are corroded and rusty-replace th
