Manual window handles, often called window cranks, have been phased out in most newer cars because of the popularity of electric windows. Manual window handles are attached to their post with a small clip, sometimes called a “C” clip or a “U” clip. Removing the handle and installing a new one requires removing the clip, which can be difficult without the proper tool. Examine the position of the handle and make a mental note of it. The reinstalled handle needs to be in the same position as the old handle. Insert the crank window tool behind the handle, between it and the door panel. Push the tool to release the clip. You may have to try this from several angles until you find the clip’s open side. Pay attention when the clip pops off; they are under pressure and can fly off, making them hard to find.
