The p-trap, or plumbing trap, is a part of the piping under your sink or bathtub. For bathtubs, the p-traps are used when there is no overflow hole between your drain and the faucet spout, and the installation of a p-trap is a means of correcting this problem. It is usually a two piece section of piping that curves under for the first section and then an elbow for the second section. The installation of a plumbing trap is an effort that can be done without the aid of a professional plumber. Hold the pop-up drain in one hand with the nut facing down. Unscrew the nut, using the pipe wrench if needed, with the other hand. Remove the rubber washer. Apply an even line of plumber’s caulk around the underside on the rim at the top area of the pop-up drain. The rim is the portion that will sit on your tub floor.
