Regular inspections and preventive maintenance keep you and your family safe. Step 1 Turn off the power to the incandescent light fixtures you plan to inspect. Test this by attempting to turn on the light. Begin your inspection. Step 2 Clean and inspect incandescent light fixtures as part of your regular cleaning routine. Remove the globe and wipe it with a slightly dampened paper towel. Wipe the bulb with a dry paper towel to remove dust. Step 3 Check the light fixture while you have the globe and bulb removed. Clean it first with a slightly damp paper towel to remove dust particles. Step 4 Look at the incandescent light fixture with the globe and bulb removed. You will see the socket, which holds the lightbulbs, and the canopy plate, the part up against the ceiling.
