Tegretol is a medication used to prevent and treat various types of seizures in patients with epilepsy through the reduction of nerve stimulation. It can also be used to treat other conditions such as bipolar disorders, Alzheimer’s related aggression, migraines and schizophrenia to name a few. Blood levels need to be drawn every three months to assess how the kidneys and liver are functioning. The Tegretol level in the blood also needs to be monitored. For the medication to be effective, adequate levels of the drug must be maintained. Step-up Therapy for Epilepsy Step 1 Start out at 200 mg twice daily (every 12 hours) or 100 mg four times per day if taking the oral suspension for the first week.
