How Do You Increase Textbook Comprehension Skills?
Teachers and parents want to increase content literacy for students. One of the best ways to do this is to improve content area reading instruction, so students have a corresponding increase in comprehension skills. It is helpful if the person instructing the student has previewed the text and is familiar with the content prior to assisting the student with these exercises. Many students do not understand the different purposes for reading. So start with explaining the difference between informational reading of a textbook and the more in-depth reading done with a novel. When reading a textbook, the student is looking to acquire specific material as directed by the instructor, or as outlined by the comprehension activities and questions presented in the book.
