How Do You Improve The Speed And Accuracy Of Big Jumps On The Piano Keyboard By Doing “Lightning Practice”?
One of the many challenges for piano students at all levels is mastering pieces that include big jumps on the keyboard without the luxury of any rest time in the music to prepare for them. Beginning students will often state with authority to their teacher that certain big jumps are simply “impossible,” but of course they aren’t as is proven by more advanced pianists. This article shows you the steps for practicing big jumps using a technique that a former teacher of mine referred to as “lightning practice.” The first obvious step is to know where you’re leaving from and where you’re going to. For this example, let’s assume that you are playing a particular chord in one hand, and then have to rapidly jump to play a different chord with that same hand one to two octaves higher. Without worrying about making the jump at all, make sure that you have worked out what fingering you will use with each chord, and that you know the names of the chords that you’re playing.
