How Do You Improve Drainage In A Plant Terrarium?

0

Terrariums trap in moisture and humidity. The plants release moisture and, because terrariums are enclosed, the moisture stays in the air. This is great for humidity-loving plants, such as tropicals. However, the downside is that some humidity-loving plants do not do well in constantly moist soil. If you grow these plants in your terrarium, you’ll need to improve the drainage. Place a layer of rocks at the bottom of the terrarium. Rocks improve drainage by soaking up moisture which drains through the potting mix. Use a 1-inch layer of rocks below the potting mix. Use a potting mix that provides for good drainage in the terrarium. Moisture drains through potting mix when the potting mix is porous. You can make the potting mix porous by adding coarse sand or perlite. Mix in one part coarse sand or perlite for every two parts potting mix. Create a false bottom in the terrarium. The best way to guarantee proper drainage is to create a reservoir under the potting mix for the water to drain
