How Do You Identify Pemphigus?
Pemphigus is a rare but serious autoimmune disease of the skin. When left untreated it can be fatal. Like most autoimmune disease, it can be treated and moderated with steroids like Prednisone. Be alert to any unusual changes to your skin. If you find you have an unusual rash or skin condition, seek medical attention. Know the signs. Pemphigus often begins with blisters on the mucous membranes and genitals. These blisters will burst, leaving an oozing wound which does not heal. The blisters associated with pemphigus may also begin on the scalp. Rarer types of pemphigus begin on the mouth, lips and in the esophagus. Know the risks. While anyone can contract pemphigus, it is most often found in people that are 30 to 60 years of age. It is also prevalent in people of Mediterranean or Jewish descent.
