How Do You Identify Horse-Eye Jack Fish?
“The fish that we are going to identify now is the Horse-Eye Jack. Horse-Eye Jacks are pelagic or deep water, open ocean dwelling fish, but they are also one of the most commonly seen pelagic fish by divers. Horse-Eye Jacks almost always travel in school and seem to enjoy hanging out under dive boats more than dive sites near deep water drop-offs. Horse-Eye schools can range in size from a few fish to hundreds of fish and a huge school of these fish is an impressive sight to behold. Horse-Eye Jacks are silver colored with yellow tail fins and large eyes which are the characteristics that set them apart from the other jacks. Their pectoral fins are usually clear. Horse-Eye Jacks can range in size from one foot up to about two and a half feet. In most cases I have been able to move into the middle of large schools of Horse-Eye Jacks and become part of the school by moving slowly and deliberately so as not to startle them.
