An Ethernet card, also called an Ethernet adapter or network interface adapter (NIC), is a network adapter found in most new laptops and computers that allows you to connect your computer to a network. Plugging an Ethernet cable from your high-speed modem or router will allow you to access high-speed internet and can connect you to other types of high-speed networks, such as a local intranet. Knowing how to identify an Ethernet card in your computer or laptop will help you determine if your computer is equipped for high-speed connectivity and will help you begin to set up a local area network. Identify the ports on the back of your computer or laptop. To physically identify your Ethernet card, find the Ethernet port (also called an RJ-45 jack) on the back of your computer or laptop.
