How Do You Identify American Elm Tree Leaves?
The American elm is a fast-growing tree that thrives in a variety of soil, moisture and lighting environments. Its species suffered during the times of the Dutch elm disease. To assist in recovering this species, it is now protected. You can identify the trees to know if it is one to protect by analyzing its leaves. Check to see if the leaves are arranged in an alternate pattern around the stem. If it does it is an American elm. The leaf should have an asymmetrical base (area near the stem). Make sure that the leaves have an oval-type of shape with a central vein with smaller veins branch from that extend to meet the grooves of the leaves’ serrated edges. Take a measurement of the leaf to see if the leaves are 2 to 3 inches in width and 4 to 6 inches in length.
