Everyone loves going to the beach, but even a day of fun in the sun isnt without its dangers. One of the most difficult to avoid dangers is the rip current! A rip current is a current that is capable of pulling a swimmer out to sea. They are usually quite narrow, but can stretch from up to 2,00o feet! The easiest way to avoid a rip current is to learn how to recognize them. As with any trip to the beach, check your surroundings. There are a few telltale warning signs that a rip current may be present. Check for areas of the water that seem unusually calm, this a sign that a rip current may be present. It is created by a central channel flowing outwards. Check the color of the water. The water within a rip current is normally a different color than the water around it. Check the shoreline. If there is a rip current present, the waterline at the shore will most likely be lower than in other places.
