How Do You Hike Great Sand Dunes National Park?
The Great Sand Dunes, located near the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Southwest Colorado, offer a unique and challenging hiking experience. There are many ways to enjoy the dunes, but you need to take a few steps to ensure everyone has a good time! There is a small entrance fee of a few dollars per adult. Children are free. Stop by the Visitor’s Center to learn more about the fascinating geology of the dunes. Plan your hike. There are two ‘high dunes’ in the park. The one that is visible from the parking lot is named ‘High Dune’. It is 650 feet tall. The tallest dune, Star Dune at 750 feet tall, is a mile and a half west of High Dune. Allow yourself at least two hours to hike to the top of High Dune and back. Allow at least three or more hours to hike to Star Dune and back. If you plan on hiking to the top of High Dune, try finding the easiest climb to the ridgeline and following that to the top.
