How Do You Hike Dog Canyon In Texas?
Visitors to Big Bend National Park should make the Dog Canyon hike part of their trip. The hike is only about 5 miles round trip for an easy day hike. Dog Canyon is an impressive, deep, narrow canyon cut into the surrounding limestone ridge in the Dead Horse Mountains of Big Bend. Due to the extreme heat of summers in Big Bend, hikes to Dog Canyon are best left to the fall and spring seasons. Drive north on the road to Marathon from Big Bend National Park headquarters for about 24 miles. Look for the Dog Canyon sign and highway pullout, about 1/4 mile north of the bridge over Bone Spring Draw. Walk toward the canyon from the parking lot across the flats. No formal trail exists, but the route to the canyon is easy across flat terrain. Drop into the wash shortly before the canyon and follow it into the canyon.
