When you strip paint off furniture or molding with the intention of varnishing or shellacking it, chances are good there will be some stubborn flecks of paint that didn’t quite come off. When the paint is light colored, it really stands out. Luckily there’s a way to deal with these that doesn’t involve cleaning the last of the paint off slowly with dental tools. Go to an art supply store and get a selection of brown paints. Burnt umber, burnt sienna…you get the idea. Include shades a little lighter, and a little darker than the finished wood. While you’re there get an artists pallet, or make one up from something flat, like a piece of plywood or heavy cardboard. The traditional curvy shape with the thumb hole is practical. Go back to your varnished project, and squeeze a small glop of each color of brown onto your artists pallet.
