If it is visible, try to remove it with you fingertips. Only put your fingers in the infant’s mouth if the obstruction is visible. Do not put your fingers down the infant’s throat. If the infant is still choking, lay the infant face up on your lap or on a firm surface. Using 2 fingers, give the infant up to 5 downward thrust to the chest. Check the infant’s mouth for any obstructions and pick them out if visible. If the object is still lodged after 3 cycles of back blows and downward chest thrusts, call 911. Keep repeating the steps until help arrives, the object is dislodged, or the infant loses consciousness.
