Apply the paste directly to the inflamed or itching skin. Move the fur aside if necessary to allow the paste to get to the skin. This paste will have a cooling effect and should help relieve itching. Reapply the paste as needed or as often as the dog begins to show signs of uncontrolled or persistent scratching. Pour Milk of Magnesia onto a cotton ball and dab it on the patch of skin where the dog keeps scratching. Dab enough so that the Milk of Magnesia covers the area but not so much that it runs down the skin.
