How Do You Help A Child Through The Grieving Process?
Grief is a hard process for everyone to go through… Especially for a child. Sometimes it’s hard to comprehend the loss of a loved one , but there must always be a sense of hope. Let him/her ask as many questions as needed in order to to resolve the event in her mind. Children have a curious nature, and if we, as adults, stop them from asking, we put a block on the process as well. Answer their questions as honestly as possible. Children are aware of the events surrounding them, and when something is being avoided. Honesty is always the best policy. Cry with them and share their pain. My nephew is still dealing with the loss of his gradmother, but- with a little venting- he usually does a lot better. Don’t be afraid to share your own experiences with a child. Let them know that you understand what they are going through. Often, this will help soothe the child’s fears or doubts.
