How Do You Handpaint A Tile Backsplash?
A tile backsplash protects the wall behind your sink from moisture and stains, but it also is meant as a decorative design element in the kitchen. If the tile is still solid, but is so dingy or outdated that you can’t stand to look at it anymore, you can paint it, with the proper preparation. The tile needs to be de-glossed with sanding and scrubbing, then primed, and then sealed at the end in polyurethane. You can paint the tiles solid colors or, if you’re artistically inclined, paint designs on it. Sand the entire surface of the backsplash with your palm sander and 200-grit paper. Get the surface as dull and smooth as you can. Mix 1/2 cup of TSP powder in a gallon of warm water. Apply it to the backsplash with a scrub brush, getting the surface as clean as possible.
