How Do You Handle Unexpected Baby Hamsters?
• Know that while it is very unlikely but it might happen that you buy a female hamster that is already pregnant. Hamsters babies are born 16 days after mating. • Realize that if your hamster does have some unexpected babies you will hear their squeaks coming from the nest. • Do not disturb the cage to look at them. The mother may panic and attack you. This is her instinctive way of protecting them. • Look for some help on how to rear the babies some place other than where you bought them. It would be a good idea to consult with a veterinarian. • Begin immediately to search for homes for the babies, because when they are only five weeks old they must be housed separately or they will begin to fight. Understand that if you cannot find a home for each of them, put them in separate cages to keep them safe from one another.
