How Do You Grow Zucchini (Cucurbita Pepo)?
Zucchini is a very prolific, hot climate loving vegetable. These are a lot of fun to grow with children because they are easy to grow and have a large yield. I recommend three plants per person in your family. How to Sow Zucchini: Direct sow zucchini seeds into the garden. Plant seeds 1 inch deep, 24 inches apart in rows 5 feet apart. Allow for 2-3 seeds per hole. How to Care for Zucchini in the Garden: Water as needed and keep weeded. Fertilize when the first flowers open. Squash has male and female flowers. The males flower first. Don’t be surprised if you don’t get fruit right away. Planting radishes next to the squash may help ward of pesky insects. If fruit gets squishy on the blossom end, this is called blossom end rot. Blossom end rot occurs when the plant does not have adequate calcium to form cell walls. The cell walls fail and you get a mushy end of your zucchini which then gets secondary infections like black mildew. Adding more calcium to the soil will not fix the problem.
