Growing seedlings in containers is a practical way to start trees that you later intend to transplant outside. Grow seedlings indoors during the winter so they are strong enough to withstand the elements during the growing season. Or, grow trees in containers to decorate your home or to display as seasonal yard decorations. Choose a container for your tree. Because trees have larger root systems than other plants, the container should be able to accommodate significant tree growth. Find a container four to six times the size of the seedling’s root ball.
