How Do You Grow The Ginger You Buy As A Root In The Store Into A House Plant?
Find the largest pot you can and fill it with a good quality potting soil. Plant the root about 3 inches deep and water it in. In about three weeks you should see at least one sprout coming up, but there will probably be more than that. Once the sprouts are about 6 inches tall add a half cup of 6-6-6- fertilizer and water it in. They need plenty of moisture; some wild gingers grow along the banks of creeks. They also need full sun to really thrive, but they will survive in partial shade. In a couple of years the plants will bloom; a stalk will grow from the ground and form an inverted pinecone-looking bud. From the bud many blossoms will appear over a span of a few weeks. When the blooms are finished the cone will turn red. Once it has changed to red you can cut the cone off and use the water inside as ginger shampoo. Don’t forget to divide the roots every few years.
