Peonies are popular for their huge, lush blooms, which can be found in a wide variety of colors. They are perennials and will continue to bloom year after year with just a little tending. Planting peonies in containers can be tricky, however. Their long stems require lots of depth and sometimes they need to be staked. Still, it is possible to grow peonies in containers if you follow the steps below. Choose the proper container. Peonies are large plants, and as such, they need a lot of space. Your container should be a minimum of 1 foot deep and 1 foot wide for one plant. Add gravel to the bottom of the planter. Next, fill the planter with topsoil. Fertilize the soil with a 5-10-5 fertilizer. You will only need to add the fertilizer every other spring after the initial filling of the container. Plant the peony root.
