You can grown edible ginger shoots from a store-bought root on your kitchen window sill. Tiny leaves will begin to shoot out of a ginger root after just a few days of water and light. The stems of these leaves are mildly flavored edible ginger shoots. These ginger shoots are often diced fresh or pickled before being added to a dish as a last minute garnish. Set up a small ginger garden in your kitchen to get more from your ginger than just the root. Select a healthy two to three-inch long ginger root from the local produce market. Choose a ginger root without any mold, scars or blemishes. Insert three toothpicks half an inch deep into the ginger root about a third of the way up its length.
