Native to South and Central America, Dragon fruit, or Pitaya, is a fruit from a cactus plant that can be grown in Florida. Dragon Fruit can be grown from seed or cutting, though the recommended method of propagation is from cuttings. The fruit is a large berry with a red or yellow peel and appear scaled. Some of the varieties of Dragon fruit have spines resembling those of a dragon. The flesh of the Dragon fruit is white red or deep pink and the seeds are black. This plant is a bit difficult to grow but well worth the effort. Cut six to 12 inches of a Dragon fruit stem off the mother plant, with a sharp knife or gardening shears. Make sure the cut is diagonal. In Florida, Dragon fruit plants can be started year around. Place the cutting in a shaded, but dry, location for 4 to 5 days to cure, or dry. Fill a two to three-gallon pot with potting soil. Bury 1/3 of the cured cutting in the soil and water well. Place the cutting where it will receive indirect filtered sunlight. Keep the soil
