How Do You Grow Date Palm Fruit?
The date palm, also known as Phoenix Dactylifera, is a fruit-bearing palm tree that has been used as a source of food for thousands of years. Only the female date palm produces fruit, but you’ll need both a male and female tree for fruit production. Female date palm trees typically begin producing fruit in their fifth year. The trees produce small, sugary fruits called dates that can be dried or eaten fresh. Choose two locations, 40 to 60 feet apart, to plant your male and female date palm trees. The spots you select should receive several hours of full sun each day and, ideally, offer well-drained soil. Prepare your two planting locations by clearing the areas of any weeds, sticks or stones.
