The Royal Poinciana is a tropical, deciduous tree that originated in Madagascar. In the United States, they are more suited to southern California, southern Florida and Hawaii. Topped by striking red blooms in the summer, this tree can grow to 40 feet tall and 60 feet wide. The fruit of the Royal Poinciana looks a bit like a large bean pod, about 18 inches long and 2 inches wide. They can be found on the ground in the spring. Starting the Royal Poinciana from seed is easy and takes about one week. Place your seeds in boiling water for 5 minutes. Gradually add cold water until the temperature is hot, but not scalding. Allow the seeds to soak overnight. Peel the outer membrane off the seed if it did not fall off during soaking.
