How Do You Grow A Loquat Tree?
The loquat is a subtropical evergreen tree originating in China and popular in Japan. There are many varieties including the bronze loquat, which is a shrub or small tree. The tree blooms fragrant, white flowers in fall with the small oval or pear-shaped fruit harvested in spring. Choose a healthy seedling from the nursery. Check for pests or disease. Pick a 2- to 4-foot high tree that is not root bound. If you want fruit, look for a grafted selection. Find a spot with full sun that is away from other trees and buildings. The loquat tree will grow up to 25 to 30 feet or more so give it plenty of room. Establish the tree by watering thoroughly at planting, then every other day for the first couple of weeks.
