Always perform grooming in a stall. It provides a comfortable, safe environment for the horse. If a horse is not accustomed to being tied up, have another person hold the horse. Approach the horse slowly and use a calm and consistent voice. Use calm, deliberate and obvious movements. Let the skittish horse see your movements and smell the tools. Brush out the tail and mane with a plastic comb. Separate the hair and be sure all dirt and straw is removed. Use the same brush to move the body hair into its natural position.
